Intake · Fax AI
Enters the clean ones in CareFlow. What it can't confirm goes to your exception list, with the reason.
Scheduling · Voice AI
SouthCoast started with screening mammography and DEXA and, within four months, was automating most ultrasound, CT and MR scheduling.
Follow-up · AI Follow-Up Recommendations
It picks up the follow-up the radiologist recommends and, once the care team approves, reaches the patient. Raul covers how Desert brings referring physicians into the loop. At Desert Imaging, 35% of recommendations were scheduled and 90% of those were completed, Jan to Aug 2026.

Mary TierneyHost, Radiology BusinessMost imaging centers aren't limited by what their AI-enabled RIS and patient engagement tools can do. They're limited by how much of the work they've actually handed over.
What they keep with people
What Fax AI can't confirm goes to your exception list, with the reason. Voice AI hands the call to your staff when a patient asks, or when it can't answer. Nothing is scheduled until the ordering physician's care team approves a follow-up.

It can do either. If you want to cut staffing hours, you can; SouthCoast chose to redeploy its team to other work instead. Raul adds the part that is harder to price: patients now expect to book a scan the way they book a flight, and this meets that expectation.

Before, Desert Imaging couldn't measure how many follow-up recommendations were acted on. Now every one is tracked, and Raul expects more are completed than before. He can also see which referring offices act on them most, and visit the ones that lag, because it comes back to patient care.

Orders arrive by fax, walk-in or electronically from an EHR like Epic over a bidirectional interface, and AI processes them. Updates and results flow back to the EHR. Patient calls, texts and confirmations run as automations in AbbaDox, and staff manage the work in the RIS, alongside Epic.
Nick Avossa
Very positively at SouthCoast: patients find it quick, efficient and friendly, and many like scheduling with it. Nick sees the same more broadly this year: the initial resistance keeps fading as people get used to AI, and the easiest path wins.

For patients it has already tried to reach, yes: when they call back, they get the AI, which books them as if the first call had connected, and those callbacks are already a real share of bookings. Answering brand-new callers is the next step, rolling out with customers now.

Every AI service comes with its own dashboard. Each decision is checked again downstream; if it changes, it is reported and used to improve the system. Often it is not an AI miss at all, but a clinically appropriate change a technologist made that wasn't on the order.
Nick Avossa
No. It answers factual questions, like prep instructions, the location or what an exam looks at, and hands clinical questions to someone at the center. Factual, not clinical.

MSK could be handed over easily; the only blocker is that those technologists don't work fixed days, so there is no rule to give the AI yet. Cardiac CT angiography runs through prior auth, a nurse and a physician, so it stays with people by design. Exceptions like these are chosen up front, so any mistakes land in predictable places.

Yes, says Raul. Many of Desert's referring physicians use the portal, where their patients with follow-up recommendations are listed and a referral is one click away, so there is far less paperwork. SouthCoast still faxes reports automatically while it sets up its portal.

No cuts planned. SouthCoast redeployed the hours: schedulers take the calls that need a person, including the callbacks the AI's calls generate, and one scheduler moved into prior authorization when a colleague left.
Stacy Butler
It already handles the volume there is: the only limit is how many orders come in. And it is a long game: a patient first contacted weeks ago may book this month, so results build over months, not days.

From day one. SouthCoast went live on a Thursday, and the AI was making its reminder and confirmation calls that same day and through the weekend.
Stacy Butler
Responsibility doesn't change: the AI does a faster, above-and-beyond version of steps that were already required. And it reads the final report and pulls out exactly what the radiologist recommended. It doesn't invent or extrapolate.

All of it, and Desert is almost there: the recommendation goes out automatically, a pending appointment is created, and the referring office sends the order back with a click. From there it is the same automation as any order: a text or call to schedule, then confirmations and reminders.

Measure what you do today, then ask how you would solve it with the technology available now; the answer is usually simpler. Bring your workflow to vendors, AbbaDox included, and ask how they would help. And talk to centers that went live about what they would do differently.

Yes. Ora is part of CareFlow, and the Ora workflows run inside it, logged in the same audit trail as a staff action. CareFlow connects to your PACS, EHR and RCM systems over HL7 (see integrations). If you are not on CareFlow yet, the demo covers CareFlow and Ora together.
