Tackling Rising Costs in Imaging Centers

You cannot negotiate a rate you cannot cost. Everything in a margin conversation depends on that one number.

The takeaway

A team that has looked at its own operation every day for years has stopped seeing it. That is not a failure of attention; it is why the outside look works.

The recap

Where the money actually goes in an outpatient imaging center

In this Voices of Experience webinar, Dianne Keen is joined by four operators for a session on rising costs in outpatient imaging: Angie Gilbert, Regional VP for the Medical Imaging Group at USPI; Linda Wilgus, Executive Director at Northwest Radiology Network; Dr. John Vizzuso, President and CEO at Radiology Matters; and Raif Erim, EVP at Regents Health Resources. The conversation is framed around outpatient centers, and the panel is explicit that most of it applies to other practice models too.

They start with cost structure, because everything downstream depends on it: what it actually costs to deliver a service, and what changes in a payer conversation once you can answer that. From there they work through holding patient experience steady while cutting expense, knowing when a team has looked at its own operation for so long that it has stopped seeing it, and where advice that fits a regional private practice stops fitting a national division.

In this episode

Four things worth your time

Know Your Cost Structure First: Why every conversation about rising costs, and every payer negotiation, begins with knowing what it costs your own centers to deliver a service, and what becomes possible once you can put that number on the table.
Efficiency Without Losing the Patient: How the panel holds patient experience steady while taking cost out, and why they treat that tension as the job itself rather than a trade-off to be settled once.
When to Bring in an Outside Eye: The argument for outside help when a team has looked at the same operation every day for years, and what a fresh assessment tends to surface first.
Different Models, Same Arithmetic: Where the panel's advice travels from a regional private practice to a national outpatient division, and where the two genuinely diverge.
